PENDING BILLS (CUENTAS POR COBRAR)
Por Martha Koestner
The Mexican Revolution of 1910, Pemex (Mexican Oil), Hugo Sanchez… when Mexicans are going to stop blaming others and charge the bill forgotten to be paid.
What bill do I mean?, the bill of nationalism. Let me mention 3 examples and you will see how our nationalism feelings have been betrayed. I will call them: pending
bills

First one: The other day I was watching a history program about the Mexican Revolution of 1910 and what grabbed my attention-(besides the political soup opera that
Mexican history is)-was the testimony of an old revolutionary man that fought under Emiliano’s Zapata leadership, sharing memories how the battles took place in the
center-south of Mexico. He cried, and I do believe in his tears, when he said how the harvest of corn crops were destroyed and the peasants ended up dying of hunger
but, mostly hunger of powerlessness. Emiliano Zapata leaded his campaign in the name of “Tierra y Libertad” (land and freedom). This fight did not do too much for
the peasants. And you might wonder “how much is not to much”, well, just watch the movie El Violin (The Violin), and also, look at the statistics and see how many
immigrants in the U.S. are Mexican peasants dying because of that historical farming revolution of 1910. But see, this peasant interviewed he fought with what he had
for what he believed in and his tears are tears courage for his country to see a change happen, and still waiting…one pending bill.

The second one: Pemex. After this Mexican Revolution of 1910, came Lazaro Cardenas to establish political order and did the nationalization of the Mexican oil, which
according to the Mexican Constitution of 1917, everything that is underground belongs to the Mexican Nation. Well, that national belonging became an “exclusive
ownership for only a few Mexican Oil Union members”, who did not know how to manage progress with this natural resource that Mexico has. Now in 2008, Pemex
has on the table to have foreign investment with better technology and more foreign capital. But how that can be possible if Pemex belong to Mexicans?. Yes,
constitutionality it is right, but there hasn’t been any Mexican able to lead and deal Pemex business in the voragine of the capitalism that Mexico is immersing itself.
Some will say that the U.S. is to blame for blackmailing Pemex and taking control of the oil in Latin America for the American interest. Well, how then will explain how
Mexican Pemex executives gain a salary equal to George Bush and thousands of immigrants keep coming to the U.S.?...a second pending bill.

And the Third one: The Mexican Soccer team. On March 31, the coach of the Mexican Soccer team, Hugo Sanchez, was fired. As the peasant with his tears, many
Mexicans are with the same hopeless tears. Why?, because the Mexican Soccer team like the Revolution of 1910, STILL is not seeing the victories that Mexicans have
been promised for years!.

Whenever the Mexican soccer team plays comes to mind:”jugamos como nunca, perdimos como siempre” (we played like we never had, and we lost like we always
do). Hugo Sanchez, like other Mexican characters, is an icon of the Mexican international success. He was a great soccer player in the Real Madrid Spanish team and
won many awards. To me, it is an example of courage to manage any obstacle in getting a goal in life. Mass media is saying that he succeeded at Real Madrid
because he was surrounded by great players as well that helped him to become a great international soccer forward.

Well, how many people are surrounded by opportunities, skills, and do nothing in life other than just blaming others for a bad destiny. Now, trying to cure the sick, the
National Mexican Soccer Federation is looking for another coach, this time he might be a foreigner. Mass media is saying that Mexican soccer needs an international
foreigner master coach who can make the Mexican soccer team jump off the bridge of mediocrity. As Mass media is crucifying Hugo Sanchez for his success
because he was surrounded by other great players, exactly the same happens with the great international soccer coaches. A player is surrounded by a great team, a
great team is leaded by a great coach, and a great coach is supported by a great CEO. In Europe and South America, specifically Argentina and Brazil, the mentality
and the view of soccer is far more different than in Mexico. Coaches are supported by a great soccer management. The Mexican idiosyncrasy is unique. If we want a
successful national soccer team, we have to start by changing the perspective of managing soccer. I agree that Hugo Sanchez should be replaced because he failed
his overview with his bosses and did not fulfill his job requirements: made the Soccer Mexican National team a world champion. The day when the National Mexican
Soccer team ends in 4th place in a World Cup, that day, at least one of the Mexican history bills won’t be pending anymore.

I will finish these thoughts by asking: don’t you think our nationalism feelings have been betrayed?. Have you wondered why has Mexican history always turned its
eyes to foreigners to get a solution to the problems when we are not able to see that the problem is within us, within our idiosyncrasy?. That is why I call them:
pending bills.
