Running for the Cure, Redaccion
Leticia was very happy to get to the finish line, I
teased her about getting to the finish line as the
last of the last, she replied that for her this was a
very important finish since she couldn't run as she
wanted to, she as well as her family --her
husband, their 3 daughters and a the cuttest 4
month old grandson-- walked all the way, in
support of this event.
Leticia is a cancer survivor. Her courage and her
strength to fight is incredible. She is cancer free
and enjoying life to the fullest. With her husband
incredible support she has recuperated at a rapid
pace.
Congratulations Leti and Family !!!

A job, an experience and an educational grant? Where can you find all these in one package? In AmeriCorps! By Alexandra Montague What is AmeriCorps? It is like the Peace Corps but whose volunteers live and work within the borders or America. AmeriCorps has a proud history of service. Did you know that President John F. Kennedy came up with the idea of VISTA, whose letters represent volunteers in service to America? It was established in 1965 to fight poverty. Over 170,000 Vista volunteers have served since then and played a key role in establishing many of the best known anti-poverty programs, including Head-Start, Upward Bound and the Credit Union System? It has over a forty year history of specifically fighting poverty. = To become an AmeriCorps member one must volunteer for a set time, for Vista's it is a year. You do volunteer "work" for 32-40 hours a week usually and for this you are paid a modest monthly stipend. At the completion of your term you have earned an educational award of about $4,700 which you apply to an approved college or this can also pay off approved school loans. There are many local, state and national organizations that use AmeriCorps volunteers as a work-force. Every state has its own "branch" and serves its own needs usually with its own residents. AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps is based on the 1930's concept that civic responsibility is an inherent duty of all citizens. Remember the three C's during WW1 and WW2? It was called the Civilian Conservation Corps. Now a-days job corps has taken that place with teaching youth skills that will lead to a job. NCCC is just an extension of all that, only you earn a stipend and an educational grant after your completion of time commitment of usually 10 months on a national project. NCCC hires youth between the ages of 18-24 years. NCCC serves in teams and directly like in building homes or tutoring whereas Vistas often offer behind the front-lines type of work like maybe recruiting volunteers for Habitat for Humanity or helping a teacher in after school programs. President Obama signed a bill to expand AmeriCorps ranks from around 75,000 to maybe up to 250,000. If you need a job why not log on to the My AmeriCorps website? Or call 1-800-942-2677. Or any e-mail; questions@americorps.org I hope this maybe a great opportunity and an answer to many as it was for me. __________________________________________
